Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the things that come up before and after printing a label. If your question is about a purchase or a refund, use the Polar portal; if it is commercial, write to hello@servingfact.com.

What is Serving Fact?

A calculator that turns per-serving values or a recipe into a US Nutrition Facts label under 21 CFR 101.9, with FDA rounding, serving size from the RACC, %DV, ingredient and allergen statements, and print-ready PDF/SVG/PNG exports. It also supports dual-column, tabular, linear and English + Spanish labels.

Is it FDA-approved?

No. The FDA does not approve private label software. Serving Fact is a calculation tool, not regulatory advice or certification. Verify the final label with a qualified professional before printing.

Does it store my recipe or my values?

No. The tool runs in your browser. Saved ingredient matches and ingredient order live in your browser's local storage. Searches go to USDA FoodData Central through our worker; we do not keep a copy of your formulation.

Why did my label not change?

Two common reasons: an ingredient row without a selected USDA match does not add nutrition, and FDA rounding can hide small changes. Check the “Not in label yet” badge and the per-serving summary before printing.

Can I use it for a product I sell?

You can generate the label, but you are responsible for the values, the serving size, the ingredient statement and the final review. For a retail product, have the finished label checked by a labeling professional.

Does it handle dual columns and small packages?

Yes. Dual columns activate when one unit weighs 200–300% of the RACC, in both “I have the values” and recipe mode. Tabular and linear formats are available for packages that cannot fit the standard vertical panel. Validate the final format against FDA's figures.

Is the Spanish label a substitute for English?

No. English is required. Spanish is additional. If Spanish appears, 101.15(c)(2) requires all required label information in Spanish too, including the ingredient statement and net quantity. The tool translates the fixed panel and headings; you must provide Spanish ingredient names and the Spanish product name.

Are claims and exemptions checked?

The tool validates a small set of per-serving claims (low sodium, sodium free, low fat, fat free, low saturated fat) and includes an orientation checker for 101.9(j). Neither is legal advice, and the exemption checker does not replace the FDA low-volume notice or a professional review.

Where does the nutrition data come from?

USDA FoodData Central. The data is public domain / CC0 1.0. Branded records are manufacturer-provided and may not reflect the current formulation. Brand names belong to their owners; no endorsement is implied.

How do I print it?

Print the PDF at 100% scale. Do not use “fit to page”. The SVG and PNG are also at real scale; the PNG is exported at 300 dpi with its physical density declared.
